What's Up - 7/8/13

Today and probably the rest of the month will be my tiny Lemoyne stars up on my wall. This is one of my Git-R-Done for this month They are small Finish size will be 3 inches. They are not that hard because I am using Deb Tucker's Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Tool. Here is a link to a YOUTube video of this tool Once you try this you realize how easy it is to do such a difficult block. Neat thing about it is that you use strips instead of templete of diamonds and squares. And there is no Y-seams. Which is a good thing because I want to make a reproduction of this antique quilt. Now my stars will be 3" but on this antique quilt which was probably sewn by hand, the stars if I remember correctly were around 2 or 2 1/2 finished stars and there are 275 stars. Now see why I'm loving this tool. Now an update on my Love Entwined  I have the compass made and need to add the inter center circle plus the outside ring. The fabric in

I love Sundays

I love Sundays, it's the day of the week that is devoted to rest and reflection. So I try my best to fulfill those things and find great satisfaction. I believe my stitching is not considered work, I find handwork very relaxing. I love making something so beautiful and useful with my hands and working on this quilt will fit those criteria. I'm piecing the center by hand, had thought about paper piecing but I don't do it enough to feel comfortable doing it. So I photocopied the pieces onto some freezer paper, then pressed onto the wrong side of my fabrics. Trace the outline of the pattern so I have a guideline to stitch by. Seeing how the pieces are all straight edges I used my ruler and rotary cutter to trim them down. I trim to under a 1/4 by not quite a 1/8 inch. The directions with the pattern are excellent and the suggestion to leave the paper on until time to stitch is an wonderful idea. You never know if an accident could happen.

A Week in Pictures on the Farm

June 30 - July 6 It was such a very nice week, weather wise. I was very busy out in the garden so much of what I have to show is from there.  Hope your week was as pleasant as mine was.

Good Intentions

It's funny how some days just don't go as plan. I try to plan out my day while having my cup of coffee in the morning. I had planned to work out in the garden first thing in the morning while it was still cool out. You see our nice cool weather is gone, it's back to summer here. I had the strawberry bed that needed weeding and the runners thinned down and grean beans to pick. see the rabbit in the background at the top I had planted these strawberries this year and they have really taken off (and so had the weeds). One thing I need to do was thin out the runner. Should have 2 or 3 per plant. This one has at least 6 or 7. And thinning is very simple, just cut off the runners. I did plan on starting new plants from the cut off runners but that didn't happen today. This is a bad picture, not clearly showing the runners.  I decided to go with 2 per plant seeing how I just planted them and I want the plant to put most of it's energy into growi

Weekly Goal - organizing my vegetable seeds

Last week I made my goal to go through my seeds I have and reorganize them and replace the ones needed to plant for the fall garden. before I started So I went through the seeds and separated the old from newer.  I tossed the old ones  and I had seeds that dated back to 1994 Then I emptied and clean out the container I store them in and went through the dividers I made and put them back in order. Found some recycled freezer bags, ( I wash my bags after I use them and save them). What I do is put the seeds in the freezer bags and then just file them in the box. Easy enough. Have a few flower seeds also off to the side. I try to mostly plant perennials but I do have some flowers I like to plant in with the veggies to help attract pollinators and they are annuals. Bought the new seeds and have all the summer crops in and here in a couple I will start with fall planting. Here the ave. first frost is Nov 3. but if you do

What's Up Monday & Get-R-Done Update

July 1st already, half the year has past. Where I live we are having below average temps, 82 today. That is almost unheard of, normally it's in the 90's and humid. Loving it and means I'm spending a lot of time  outside and not that much in the sewing room. I know it will not last and I'll be back to the sewing room when it's too hot to be out. What's up on the wall is one of my RSC13 . I'm a couple months behind and this is Aprils color orange. Still have blue,   yellow and this months teal  to do. I know what I want to make, it's just doing it. This months (April) baby quilt I made fabric from scraps and then on a piece of fusible interfacing I drew a circle on the plain side. I put the fusible side next to right side of the fabric and stitch on the  circle I drew. Trim the circle and made an opening in the fusible to turn it inside out Try to push out the edge as much as you can to make the circle round. I have mi
